Herbert Asquith Herbert was the son of George, a Deputy in a coal mine, and Maria Asquith who in 1901 were living at Newstead Road, Outwood. He was 6 at the time of the census and was the eldes tof 4 children. Herbert enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI, service no 2108. He died of wounds on 24 May 1915 aged 20 and is buried at Sailly-Sur-La-Lys Canadian Cemetery, nr Armentieres. The cemetery contains 312 Commonwealth casualties and one German. By 1915 George Asquith was living at Oakdene, Lofthouse Gate.
Walter Arnold Walter was the son of Alfred and Mary Arnold of Bradford Road, Outwood. Alfred, born in Peckham Rye, was a coal hewer in a local mine. Walter had been born, like the rest of the family in Wrenthorpe. He enlisted to the KOYLI, 2786in Wakefield and like Herbert Asquith who served in the same Btnn, he died of wounds on 10 June 1915 and is also buried in Sailly-Sur-La-Lys Canadian Cemetery, nr Armentieres
John Hy. Ainsworth John Henry was the son of Joseph Ainsworth, who in 1901 was a widow with 4 children. John was born in Birkenshaw but 1901 saw him with his father in Brandy Carr. John enlisted in Wakefield, joining the East Yorkshire Regt., as no 39572. He was KIA on 10 october 1918 aged 25 and is remembered at Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau, nr. Cambrai along with over 500 identified casualties.

Herbert Brook Herbert was born in Lofthouse and enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KRRC, no C/1763. He was KIA on 15 September 1916 and is remembered at Quarry Cemetery, Montauban, nr Albert along with 598 identified casualties.
Harold Burnley Harold was the son of Fred and Ida who in 1901 were lioving in Albert Street, Castleford. Fred being like many in the area, a miner. harold was born in 1895 in Stanley, Wakefield. He enlisted in Leeds, joining the RFA as a bombardier, service no 96142. He was also awarded the MM. By 1917 he had married. He was KIA on 19 October 1917 aged 23 and is remembered at Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Nr Ypre. His wife later re-married and lived at Lake Lock, Stanley.
John S Brundred John Samuel was according to sources born in Leeds but enlisted into Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Regt, with service no 15878 in Wakefield. He was KIA on 8 September 1916 and is remembered at Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuile Wood, nr Albert along with 490+ identiried casualties and over 500 unidentified.
Bramwell Bennett Bramwell served in the KOYLI, no 12/92, enlisting in Rothwell. He died of wounds on 14 April 1918
William Berry William joined the KOYLI in Wakefield, becoming no 200893. He was KIA on 27 November 1917 and is remembered at the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
William Birmingham In 1901 William was a boarder in Dewsbury and employed as a general labourer.His parents were Thomas and Margaret Birmingham. He enlisted into the KOYLI in Dewsbury, becoming Pte., 17467. He was KIA on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, aged 34 and he is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial
Walter Bower Walter, born in Drighlington in 1898, was the son of John and Mary Bower. The family in 1901 were living on Whitehall Road, Drighlington. Walter joined the KOYLI in Wakefield and became Cpl., 201525. He died of wounds on 31 July 1917 aged 19 and is remembered at Mount Houn Military Cemetery, Le Treport. His parents by this time had moved to Grand View, East Ardsley.
Timothy Brunt Timothy, born in 1899 was the son of Thomas Blunt born in Methley and Mary Ann born, like her children in Warmfield. 1901 sees the family living at Talbot and Falcon Yard, Wakefield - thomas being a coal miner. Timothy enlisted in Wakefield, joining the DLI no 77447. He was KIA on 26 March 1918 aged 19 and is remembered at the Pozieres Memorial. By 1918 his parents were living at Bishopgate, Wakefield

Walter Binks Walter was the son of James and Mary who in 1901 lived at Blackgates Farm and was one of 6 children. Walter was born at West Ardsley and enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as no 52529. He later joined the York and Lancs Regt., as service no 53734. Walter died of wounds on 9 November 1918 and is remembered at St Andre Communal Cemetery. He left a widow, Ada, of Melbourne Lodge, Carr Gate.
William Crossland William was born in Wakefield and in 1901 aged 15 was a brick layer in Lofthouse. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KRRC becoming rifleman C/1149 or as seen in other sources C/7149. He died on 23 August 1918 and is remembered at Grand-Seraucourt British Cemetery.
Arthur G Crone In 1901 George and Rosina Crone were living on Balne Lane, Wakefield with their son Arthur George who was aged 1, as boarders in the home of John Perry. George was a Grocers (?) Manager. Arthur had been born in Doncaster. He enlisted in the T R Battn., no 5/220266 but later was transfered to the KOYLI no 62970. He was KIA on 2 September 1918 aged 18 and is remembered at Vaulx Hill Cemetery, nr Baupame along with nearly 600 identified casualties.
Harold Caines Harold, one of 4, was the son of Harry and Emma who in 1901 were living at South View, Ouchthorpe Lane. Harold enlisted in Wakefield, joining the East Yorkshire regiment, as Pte., 39606. He was KIA on 10 October 1918 aged 26 and is remembered at Neuvilly Communal Cemetery Extension, along with over 90 other identified casualties.
Walter Davies Walter was the son of Henry, born in Islington and Maria who was born in Doncaster. Henry worked on the railway. Walters older siblings were born in Todmorden, but he and his younger siblings were born in Wakefield. Walter enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte., 201369. He was KIA on 3 May 1917 aged 26 and is remembered at the Arras Memorial. At the time of Walters death his parents were living at Quebed Street, and his wife, now Eva Newton, was living at Steele's Buildings, Leeds Road, Outwood.

Michael Daley Michael was the son of Michael and Avril Daley who were both born in Ireland. In 1901 the family were living at Gosnay Row and Michael snr was a coal hewer. Michael jnr enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as L/Cpl 3319. He was KIA on 21 August 1916 and is remembered at Puchevillers British Cemetery, nr Amiens. William H Embleton William Henry, born in Bradford was 19 in the 1901 census - a coal miner and living with Joseph and Alice Dixon and 5 children. William is described as being the step-son to the head of the household. William enlisted in Wakefield, joining the Duke of Wellington's as Pte 202723. He was KIA on 3 September 1917 aged 33 and is remembered at Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval. He left a widow, Florence who remarried.
John W Elmy John William was the son of William and Hannah Elmy who in 1901 were living in Gildersome. John enlisted in Wakefield, joining the Royal Fusiliers as G/18820, he later moved to the MGC as Pte., 14779. He was KIA on 31 October 1918 and is remembered at Valenciennes (St Roch) Communal Cemetery, along with over 800 identified casualties.
William E Freeman Possibly, William Edgar Freeman who lived in Batley and enlisted into the West Yorks Regt., no 21641 in Dewsbury. He later transfered to the MGC no 44739. He was KIA on 14 June 1917 aged 34 and is remembered at the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
Mark Frost Mark was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Frost of Bragg Lane End, Wrenthorpe. Mark enlisted in Wakefield joining the KOYLI as no 4865. He also served in the Scots Rifles as no 203752, but was in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regt), no 271220 when he died of wounds on 4 June 1918 aged 19. He is remembered at Aubigney Communal Cemetery Extension, nr Arras.
Edgar Fryer Edgar was the son of Henry and Olive who in 1901 were living in Crigglestone. Edgar enlisted in Wakefield and joined the KOYLI, no 1600. He later moved to the York and Lancaster Regt., no 21049. He was KIA on 15 August 1917 aged 28 and is remembered at the Menin Gate Memorial. He left a widow, Dora of Oak Cottages, Calder Grove.
George Greenwood Possibly, George who was born in Cleveland and enlisted in Wakefield. KIA on 27 September 1917 aged 23 and remembered on the Memorial at Loos.

Colin Gelder Colin, was born in 1893/4 in Birdwell, the son of Edmond and Elizabeth Gelder who in 1901 were living in Worsborough. Colin's elder brothers and father were all miners. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte 3558. he died of wounds on 3 July 1916 - only 2 days after the the start of the First Battle of the Somme. Colin is buried at Forceville Communal Cemetery Extension near Albert along with over 300 identified Commonwealth casualties and 7 German.
John W Goldby John William Goldby was born in Moreton, Pinkney. In 1901 he was 24 years old and living with his wife, 19 year old girl from Windhill,Mary A, at 12 Tenter Street, Shipley. John joined the KOYLI in Wakefield becoming Pte 205572 and was KIA on 2 September 1918 and remembered at Vaulx Hill Cemetery.
Henry Garbutt In 1901 Henry, his parents, John and Harriet and elder brother Joseph were all living in Bank Street, Morley. The family moved to Outwood and it was while living here that Henry enlisted to the KOYLI in Wakefield, service no 51541. He was later moved to the Coldstream Guards. Henry was KIA on 4 November 1918 and he is remembered at Villers-Pol Communal Cemetery Extension. He lied with over 150 Commonwealth casualties and 74 German
Harry S Gething Harry Steele Gething was the son of Caleb and Lucy Gething. Caleb was born in Durham while Harry and his siblings were born in Outwood and Castleford. 1901 finds the family living on Leeds Road Outwood and Harry being 1 of 5 children. He enlisted in Wakefield and joined the KOYLI as Pte 15616. He was KIA on 3 October 1918 and is remembered at Vis-en-Artois Memorial with over 9000 other men of the Commonwealth
Edward Hartshorn 1901 sees Edward living with his parents Albert and Fanny at 115 Stanley Road, Wakefield. Both Albert and Edward were coal miners, Edwards 2 brothers and 2 sisters were 13, 11, 8 and 6. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI, no 200487 and becoming a L/Cpl. He was KIA on 26 August 1918 and is remembered at A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers. He left a wife, Rose of Lands Yard, Northgate.

John Hilton Jehosaphat and Clementine were the parents to Thomas 10; Ethel 9; John 6; and Harry 4, living at HIgh Street, Silkstone in 1901. John enlisted into the KOYLI no 200843 in Wakefield and by this time his family were living at Tavora Street, Wakefield. John was KIA on 20 July 1918 aged 23 and remembered at Chambrecy British Cemetery along with over 240 identified casualties.
John Herberts John was the son of Peter, born in Ireland and Ann J from Wakefield. In 1901John, his parents and 4 siblings were living at 80 Atlas Street, Brinsworth, Peter being a coal miner. By 1915 the family had moved to 2 Sun Lane, Warrengate and Peter had possibly died. John enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI no 2854. He was KIA on 19 December 1915 and is remembered at Bard Cottage Cemetery.
Joseph Hough Joseph was 5 in 1901 and his mother was a widow with 8 children, the youngest being only 1, the family were living at Matlock Street in the Parish of St Andrews, Wakefield. Joseph enlisted in the town and joined like most of the local lads the KOYLI, becoming Pte., 1979. He was KIA on 14 August 1915 and is remembered at Talana Farm Cemetery near Ypres along with over 500 identified casualties.

Arthur Kenny Arthur joined the TR Battn, no 75555, later being moved to Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own as no 43494. Arthur died in India on 29 October 1918 and is buried at Cherat New Cemetery, and remembered at the Delhi Memorial ( India Gate ). There are over 13,000 names of Commonwealth casulaties and it is also the National Memorial to over 70,000 Indians who died served during The Great War. The Delhi Memorial that was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
John G Kenny John G named on this memorial is found as John Gleeson in my sources. He was both born and enlisted in Wakefield and the son of John and Elizabeth who in 1918 were living at 39 Warrengate. John (Joe) joined the KOYLI as Pte 65240. He died of wounds on 21 October 1918 only a few weeks before the end of the war. He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.

Ernest Leather Ernest was the son of Thomas and Harriet who in 1901 were living at Bradford Road, Wrenthorpe. Ernest like his 5 brothers and sisters had been born in Wrenthorpe. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte 12/184. He died ov wounds of 27 April 1918 aged 37 and is buried at Haringhe (Bandaghem) Military Cemetery. He left a wife Amy, who later remarried a gentleman by the name of Carter, living in Brick Yard, Greenhill, Wakefield
James E Lunn James Ellis Lunn served in the Royal Engineers as sapper 79293. He was the son of Joseph and husband of Ethel who lived off Bolus Lane, Outwood. He was born in Stanley and enlisted in Wakefield and was KIA on 21 October 1918 aged 25 and remembered at Maurois Communal Cemetery. He had previously been in the KOYLI Tunn. Coy no 21433.
Amos Learoyd Amos was the son of Emmanuel and Annie who in 1901 were living in Canal lane with Amos and their other 8 children. Amos was born in Stanley and enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte 15235. He was KIA on 1 July 1917, the first day of The First Battle of the Somme, aged 26 and is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial along with many other young men who died on that day. Note : on some sources the surname is spelt 'Leayord'
Frank Layden Frank was the son of John and Florence Layden who in 1901 were living at Riley's Buildings, Thornes Wharf. Frank was born in Cleckheaton but his family moved to Bunkers Hill, Wrenthorpe prior to 1918. Also before 1918 his father had died and Florence remarried Albert Brown. Frank enlisted in Wakefield, joining the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regt.,) as Pte 45073. He was KIA on 3 August 1918 aged 20 and is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
Islam Morrey Islam or as Isaiah as he is found in the majority of sources was the son of Joseph and Hannah who in 1901 were living in Wynn Street in the Parish of St Andrews, Wakefield. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte 200890. He was KIA on 15 March 1917 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
Harry Mawson Possibly, Harry, son of John and Hannah and husband of Ethel of Rothwell. Harry served in the West Yorkshire Regiment no 306466. He died on 23 June 1918 and is buried at Hamburg Cemetery.

At the time George was 6 years old with one older brother and a sister aged 3 and brother aged 4 months. He was born in Kirkhamgate but some sources say Leeds, he did however, enlist in Wakefield, joining the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, becoming Pte., S/40263. He was KIA on 14 December 1916 aged 22 and is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial. His parents were at the time living at 4 North Terrace, Kirkhamgate.
Harry Mellis Possibly, Harry Mellish who was the son of Alfred and Mary who in 1901 were living in Normanton. Harry enlisted in Wakefield to the RE's becoming Spr., 175542. He was KIA on 15 November 1918 and is remembered at Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery. He left a widow Mrs F E Mellish, of 4 Back Hatfield Street, Wakefield.
William Milner William was the son of Joe and Emma Milner who in 1901 were living at 13 Hope Street, Wakefield. Some sources say that William was born in Kirkhamgate, while others state Wakefield. He did enlist in Leeds and join the West Yorkshire Regiment, Cpl., 306467. William was KIA on 16 April 1918 and is remembered at the Tyne Cot Memorial.

He was later in the Prince of Wales's Own, as Pte., 43333. He died of wounds on 17 November 1918 aged 35 and is remembered at Cambrai East Military Cemetery. By 1918 his family were living at Fife Terrace, Leeds Road, Outwood.
Ernest Wade Ernest, born in 1875, was the son of John and Eliza who in 1891 were living at Mill Lane Soothill. John worked as a Common Carrier to support his family while a 15 year old Ernest was a Coal Miner. In the census of 1901 he was in Hanging Heaton working as a Hewer in a Coal Mine, living with his wife Emily and 2 children. According to sources Ernest had been born in Hanging Heaton. He did enlist in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte., 17393. He was KIA on 23 September 1917 and is remembered at the Tyne Cot Memorial along with over 34,000 other Commonwealth casualties.
George Wood George was the son of George and Isabella of Dewsbury. George enlisted in Wakefield and enlisted into the KOYLI as Pte., 17540. He was KIA on 27 September 1915 aged 28 and is remembered at Lillers Communal Cemetery. George left a widow, Harriet who later remarried an Oveton and lived at Rodger Fold, Kirkhamgate.
Joseph W Whitham Joseph William was born in Wakefield and enlisted in to the KOYLI's in the town, becoming Pte., 19836. He died of wounds on 22 January 1916 and is remembered at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension.
Joseph Ward Joseph enlisted in to the KOYLI as Pte., 201528. He was KIA on 2 November 1918 and is remembered at the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
Benjamin Ward Benjamin enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte., 17439. He was KIA on 1 July 1916, the first day of the First Battle of the Somme. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial
Fred Whitwham Possibly - Fred, the son of Friend Frederick and Eliza Whitwham who was born in Batley. He enlisted in Leeds, joining the KRRC as Rifleman R/7706. He was KIA on 13 December 1917 and is remembered at Oxford Road Cemetery.
John W Welch John William was the son of Mrs Annie Welsh who enlisted in Wakefield. He joined the KOYLI as Pte., 2833. He was KIA on 4 May 1915 and is remembered at Bois Grenier Communal Cemetery.
Thomas Walpole In 1901 Thomas and his parents, Walter and Sarah were living at Tythe Barns Street, Horbury. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte., 15742. He was KIA on 1 July 1916,the first day of the First Battle of the Somme, aged 29 and is remembered at Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuile Wood. He left a wife, Martha Ann of 40 Horbury Road, Wakefield.
Alfred Williamson Alfred was born in Wakefield and enlisted there, joining the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery, as Bdr., L/11933. He later worked in the Anti-Aircraft Bty. He was KIA on 19 August 1917 aged 33 and is remembered at theBard Cottage Cemetery. He left a wife, Stella, who lived at 13, Elba Cottages, Spring End, Horbury.
Ben Warren Benjamin Warren was the son of Jane and stepson of James Hudson, who lived at Bradford Road, Wrenthorpe. He enlisted in Wakefield and joined the West Yorkshire Regt., as 47895. he later joined the Northumberland Fusilers, as Pte., 35794. He died on 28 April 1917 aged 19 and is remembered at the Arras Memorial. In 1901 his mother Jane, was stated as living at Wheel Hill, Bragg Lane End, Wakefield.
John Willows John was the son of Charles and Ann who in 1901 were living in Rodney Yard, Wakefield. John enlisted in London, joining the RGA as a bombardier. His service number is not consistant either 18910 or 16910 - this could be just a misinterpretation of the numbers. John died on 19 June 1916 and is remembered at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
Tom Wigglesworth Tom was possibly the son of George and Annie who in 1901 lived in Beaumonts Yard, Wakefield. He enlisted in Wakefild joining the KOYLI as Pte., 4569. He died of wounds on 11 August 1916 and is remembered at Warloy-Baillon Communal Extension.
